This black and white image of a blazing Japanese maple tree at Portland's Japanese Garden was done in Photoshop. After capture sharpening, I created a new layer and applied the black and white filter option, using the sliders to turn the orange colors in the leaves white, creating something of a faux infrared effect.
To emphasize the delicate texture of the leaves and surrounding foliage, I created another layer and applied the Find Edge filter, reducing the opacity so that it enhanced, rather than dominated the effect.
The use of Canon's 17-40 mm f/4 lens at 24 mm helped to make the tree stand out against the background,
